Gynecology Q & A
What is gynecology?
Gynecology refers to general care for issues dealing with a woman’s pelvic and reproductive organs. Dr. Petr provides gynecological care that includes:
- Yearly wellness exams
- Birth control support
- Regular screenings for cervical and breast cancer
- Evaluation of yeast infections and vaginitis
- Screening for sexually transmitted diseases
- Investigation and diagnosis of endometriosis
- Support for polycystic ovary syndrome
If you have symptoms or questions associated with your pelvic organs or period, discuss these concerns with Dr. Petr.
What is involved in routine gynecological care?
Your annual exam is part of routine gynecological care. This visit includes a review of your health history, a pelvic exam, and clinical breast exam. Through these exams, Dr. Petr gets a better understanding of your reproductive health, breast health, and pelvic organ function — such as your bladder.
Wellness visits for women begin in adolescence and continue through and after menopause. Gynecology visits before age 21 usually don’t include a pelvic exam.
A well-woman exam is an opportunity to discuss your period, birth control, pregnancy, or menopause. You may also raise your concerns about sexually transmitted diseases and any painful symptoms you may be experiencing. These may include vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, or heavy menstrual bleeding.
What screenings are part of gynecology care?
The Pap smear, which can identify an increased risk for cervical cancer, is a critical part of your regular gynecological care. Dr. Petr uses a swab to collect a sample of cells from your cervix, which is then sent to a lab for analysis. An abnormal Pap smear result doesn’t mean you have cancer, just that you have cells that warrant more investigation.
STD tests are not a routine part of your wellness exam, but can be ordered if you request them. If you have multiple partners or your partner does, you benefit from getting screened to prevent complications if you do have an STD. Many STDs don’t show outward symptoms.
If you have symptoms such as irregular bleeding, uncomfortable bloating, or pelvic pain, Dr. Petr may order additional tests, including blood tests, ultrasounds, and urine evaluations.
After the age of 40, Dr. Petr recommends you undergo a yearly mammogram to review your breast health. Some women may benefit from earlier mammograms, depending on their personal or family history or symptoms.
